17th Annual Fitzgerald Dinner

Thank you to everyone who joined us on November 17th at the beautiful Grace restaurant in Portland to support Maine's longest-standing gun violence prevention organization. South Portland Police Chief Ed Googins received the Fitzgerald Award in front of a sold-out crowd of public servants and concerned community members.

The award is named for the late Buzz Fitzgerald, who co-­founded the Maine Gun Safety Coalition with Congresswoman Chellie Pingree and attorney William Harwood following the Columbine High School Massacre in 1999. It was only fitting that we celebrated the end of an incredible year of growth by featuring Congresswoman Pingree as the guest speaker and announcing that Bill Harwood is taking the reigns as MGSC President.

Gun Violence in Maine Conference

In partnership with the American Bar Association and the University of Southern Maine, the Maine Gun Safety Coalition organized a one-day conference about how best to respond to gun violence in Maine.

TV Host Bill Green moderated panels that included David Hemenway of Harvard School of Public Health, Past AMA President Dr. Robert McAfee, Dr. Daniel Meyer of Maine Medical Center, Portland Police Chief Mike Sauschuck and many more.

Concert Across America to End Gun Violence

On September 25th, the Concert Across America to End Gun Violence featured over 5,200 artists performing a day of music to honor the victims of gun violence at over 350 events across the country.

The Maine Gun Safety Coalition co-sponsored two concerts, one in Portland and the other in Bangor. The Portland concert at Congress Square Park featured the Phoenix Chorale, Pihcintu, Lyle Devinsky, Wes Covey, Rhonda Dale, and City Councilor Ed Suslovic, Judi Richardson of Remember Darien, and MGSC Executive Director Nick Wilson. 

The Bangor event at the Unitarian Universalist Society featured performances by Peter Sorkin, Servant Strings, and Friday Night Fire.
