Sagadahoc Sheriff’s Office to host gun safety training in wake of 2021 shootings

MGSC Executive Director Geoff Bickford spoke with the Times Record about the gun safety training program being offered by the Sagadoahoc Sheriff's Office.

After two child-involved shootings last year in West Bath, and the state of Maine's ongoing lack requirement for gun owners to take any training and safety course, or show any competency or knowledge about how to handle or store a firearm, this program is very much needed.

As Sagadahoc Sherrif Joel Merry said, "Anybody can go into a store and walk out the proud owner of a 9mm, whether you know how to use that 9mm or not,” said Merry, who has served as the county’s sheriff for 13 years. “That’s what we want to make sure: That people know what the weapon is capable of and how it should be handled properly.”
