Maine’s 2026 Gun Safety Champions

The Maine Gun Safety Coalition seeks to elect gun violence prevention advocates to every level of government who are committed to pursuing common-sense, evidence-based approaches to reducing gun violence and saving lives in Maine. Last November, nearly two-in-three Mainers made it clear that our state believes that with gun rights come responsibilities, like keeping guns out of dangerous hands. For too long, elected leaders have been out of touch with voters on this issue.

This year we sent endorsement questionnaires to every viable candidate running for the state legislature, for governor, and for Congress. Our endorsements are based on responses to those questionnaires, voting records for incumbents, and all available public information such as campaign statements and media coverage.

Early voting has already started. Make sure to vote in our Primary Election on June 9!

“MGSC Endorsed” denotes our single endorsement in a race. In the case of multiple gun safety leaders in a single race, candidates were given an “MGSC Champion” rating. An asterisk (*) denotes an incumbent.

GOVERNOR’S RACE

Shenna Bellows, Champion

"For far too long, Maine has been considered a state where common sense gun regulation has been impossible. But as we saw in 2025, it wasn’t that Mainers weren’t ready – it was that our politicians lacked the political courage to get it done. I'm the bold leader Maine needs to keep our state safe.” - Shenna Bellows

  • Backed legislation to safeguard polling places from dangerous weapons, and protecting municipal offices and voting places would be a top priority for Bellows as Governor.

  • Endorsed Question 2 in 2025

Troy Jackson, Champion

"I still believe in responsible gun ownership. I still believe in Maine’s sporting traditions. But those beliefs are not at odds with keeping our families and communities safe. In fact, they demand it. Responsible gun owners know that rights come with responsibilities — including the responsibility to protect our neighbors from preventable tragedy.” - Troy Jackson

  • Hunter and fifth generation logger from Allagash formerly endorsed by the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine.

  • Evolved on the issue of gun safety after the Lewiston shooting, and led his caucus to pass background checks and the 72-hour waiting period law.

  • Vocally supported Question 2 and wrote a powerful column endorsing a ‘Yes’ vote.

Hannah Pingree, Champion

"As a mom to two kids, ensuring that all Maine kids can grow up free from the fear of gun violence is so important. We can protect the rights of responsible gun owners while still taking common-sense steps to prevent gun violence, keep weapons out of dangerous hands, and make our communities safer for all.” - Hannah Pingree

  • When serving as Majority Leader and Speaker of the House, voted for background checks at gun shows, supported gun-free schools, opposed a bill to allow guns on college campuses, and co-sponsored legislation to restrict the sale of guns to 16- and 17-year-olds.

  • Endorsed Question 2.

Nirav Shah, Champion

"As a public health leader, I see gun violence as a public health crisis that demands prevention, data, and action. That means focusing on what we know saves lives: safe storage, strong mental health supports, and intervening in moments of crisis before they become tragedies. It also means being honest about the scope of the problem.” - Nirav Shah

  • Embraces a public health-based approach to preventing gun violence, and helped steer the CDC to track and publicly release gun violence data.

  • Understands the trends and statistics regarding gun deaths in Maine and is aligned with the evidence-based approach that MGSC takes to prioritizing policies.

  • Endorsed Question 2
